Look at all that WOOL. The Japanese have no time for show-offy, nouveau-riche, cold in the winter, hot in the summer leather. Leather is a terrible material for seating and I have no idea why it’s become so popular.

Because appearance... Leather looks luxurious. That’s why the Century is so awesome... They don’t care about the appearance, they just want the ultimate comfort.

Oh yes. Please let leather die. Crunch Velour is the real luxury material.

Kinja'd!!!

My sister had a 740 GLT with this interior and man was it comfy.

If those seats are heated, they’ve really done it. There’s nothing better than a heated cloth seat in the winter.

I would give anything for wool interiors to become popular in the US.

This is one reason I like my E92 so much, it’s got the Sensatec interior.

Maybe people like leather for it being easy to wipe clean?

I think Subaru has a similar product with heated seats? I know the BRZ has heated seats on their alcantara option.

Leather is a crapton easier to clean than most other things, though...

I’ll deal with the disadvantages if it means I can clean crushed Cheetos and graham cracker from my back seats lol. If I was childless then cloth is fine for me.

Up until the 1920s, leather was mainly used as a durable material, like horse saddles before. If you owned a very fancy chauffeur-driven car, the chauffeur’s bench would be done in leather, while the rear would be some sort of fancy wool or unusual hide. Apparently wool became common in most American cars up to the 1940s once closed cars took over open cars, and seats didn’t have to be so weather-resistant.

Or maybe it’s mostly due to it being a Volvo seat ...

Heated and cooled seats as standard from 2005

No I’ve sat in the same seat in leather and it’s not the same.

There are so many examples of soft, luxurious cloth out there, I have no idea why we’re so leather obsessed.

Even if you just like the look of leather, vinyl does the same thing with better durability and easier care. My 1984 Town Car has blue velour seats that still look factory fresh, not a trace of wear or fading, most leather interiors from then have dried out and split by now.

And, if you want comfort, wool and velour are so comfy and can be made to look quite attractive.

Well somebody cares about appearance. If this car makes it to production then German is officially not the king of understand luxury.

That is true, but for an expensive luxury car I wouldn’t think easiness to clean would be a top priority.

That hasn’t been the case since Mercedes started doing all those crazy creases, Audis all got giant black fake grilles, and BMW let Chris Bangle do his thing.

Of course, vinyl, like MB-Tex, has the same attribute and also holds up much better over time without maintenance.

The SHO I bought in ‘97 sat on the lot forever because it had cloth interior. For me, that was a feature, not a flaw. Leather is overrated.

Your point is well made. But maybe the automakers are thinking of us Opponauts who won’t buy it new, but used, and don’t have “people” who clean our cars?

......nope, that’s not it...

This isn’t a concept, it’s a preproduction unit of an announced third generation of an existing product.

And this is what the outgoing Century’s interior looks like:

I always thought that leather seats were popular because the most desirable open sports cars had them, and that’s because leather is the best material for seats that get a lot of exposure to sun and rain.
